Neoral® (cyclosporine, USP) MODIFIED is used to prevent organ rejection in kidney, liver, and heart transplant recipients. Although Neoral® and Sandimmune® (cyclosporine, USP) contain the same active ingredient, cyclosporine, these medications are absorbed differently in the body and should not be used in place of the other. Routine monitoring of cyclosporine amounts in the blood is required to avoid the harmful effects of having too much or too little drug in the body. Patients should check their prescriptions to ensure that doctors have specified which cyclosporine brand, Neoral® or Sandimmune®, should be dispensed. The principal adverse side effects of cyclosporine therapy in transplantation are changes in kidney function, tremor, extra hair growth, high blood pressure, and excess growth of the gums. Neoral® may increase susceptibility to infections and neoplasia. If you have any questions, ask your doctor and see accompanying full prescribing information.
